Phusion Passenger and Dreamhost
So the big announcement in the Ruby on Rails world is Phusion Passenger A.K.A. Mod Rails. Mod Rails takes the pain out of deploying Ruby on Rails applications, simply upload your files and that is it.
Dreamhost announced the other day that it has installed Mod Rails on their servers. I decided to check it out so I went into the control panel, clicked the Mod Rails check box and hit submit. I checked my Rails app that I run on Dreamhost (URL with held as the app is super secret for now) and it was still running and much faster than FCGI.
I am 100% impressed with this product
Initially I thought it was pretty good but it occurred to me that I wasn’t really sure if Mod Rails was running or if FCGI was just running really fast. So I created a new sub domain, activated Mod Rails for the new domain and uploaded my files. I waited the 5 minutes it took to upload and went to the site. I was amazed it was working, working fine. It was fast, faster than this blog too. I am 100% impressed with this product.
I was so impressed that I went to www.modrails.com and purchased an Enterprise Edition. It just so happens that today was the last day of name your own price. Unfortunately I don’t have much money to give so I didn’t give much but it is nice to give back to a company that is giving back to the community.
Dan I have to admit thanks to your blog I was able to pull out a Ruby on Rails reference at a web session yesterday. Made me look smart.

I’m glad I could help you look smart at the How Conference. See you back at Max’s?
